Join me and a fabulous crowd of attendees as we unite together for a day of fashion and philanthropy to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

St. Jude leads the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.  Located in Memphis, Tennessee, the center is at the cutting-edge of the latest medicine and research in life-threatening pediatric diseases, such as cancer, all while freeing families from the biggest burden in getting life-saving healthcare: the cost.

Events like the HOF are so important to the continued success of St. Jude because the center receives the majority of it’s funding from generous donors.   With a $2 million a day hof1operating cost, every dollar counts and the results are evident today as St. Jude has increased the survival rates for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) from 4% (in 1962) to 94%.

Summer Fashion Series Continues

It’s here… the next show in April Yvonne’s Signature Style Series, partnered with the Capella Georgetown, D.C., featuring Calypso St. Barth will occur on May 14th from 12pm – 2pm on the Rooftop Lounge of the hotel.

MORE: Get Tickets

On the heels of a sold-out show in March with Elie Tahari, April has brought in one of her favorite luxury resort wear brands right in time for the warmer weather! “Calypso St. Barth is a must-go for me personally and for my clients because they have perfect pieces to pack for warm weather getaways and I always find beautifully unique items,” said April.

So what is it you ask? Well, it all started when April wanted to bring a portion of what she experiences during Fashion Week in New York here to DC, so she created the Style Series, where by partnering with designers and luxury brands, April conducts sold-out fashion events allowing her following to experience first-hand her inherent passion and devotion to fashion. In addition to being one of DC’s top fashion stylists, April is also the Resident Stylist at the Capella DC, so this partnership was a match made in heaven for her series.

The Calypso St. Barth show will take place on the exclusive Rooftop of the Capella DC, which offers stunning views of our beautiful city…the perfect backdrop for the informal presentation April will conduct showcasing some of her favorite looks from Calypso St. Barth’s latest collection as guests enjoy a delicious lunch and cocktail from the hotel’s restaurant, The Grill Room.

Following, guests will be able to shop on-site all the looks April presents during the show and receive on-hand fashion advice from April and representatives from Calypso St. Barth.

Plus, each ticket purchase qualifies you in for a chance to win some AMAZING raffle prizes, like: a Calypso St. Barth dress, valued at $495; a Beauty Class for you and 5 friends at Blue Mercury Georgetown; brunch for two at The Grill Room; or a 1-hour personal shopping trip with April Yvonne.

Finally, a portion of the ticket proceeds will benefit a charity that is very near and dear to April – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, whose mission is to find a cure for children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases through research and treatment and where no family every pays St. Jude for anything.

Here’s a peek at some of the looks you will see and shop at the show:

Operation Convert (to twitter)

So I had a really great time visiting with resident of Riderwood in Silver Spring this week. I was invited to come and speak about how social media is changing and shaping news. I talked about how we use these new tools to help tell stories and add new dimensions. I also tried to drive home how it’s important it is for our viewers to get on board. Now more than ever you have a voice in what we cover and how we cover it. Journalism is no longer a one way street. A man named Bob asked me why we never report on all this growing petitions online that seem newsworthy. It was the perfect question because in the last week someone tweeted me a link to a white house petition.. I sent it to producers and we ended up using it on-air during our show. I also told them how cool their grandkids would think it was if they saw gramps on twitter 🙂 Overall it was a lovely experience and I’ve since learned their computer lab is going to host a twitter “how to” class to show residents how to tweet! I LOVE THIS STUFF!

Jewels of Asia

It was a night that sparkled! The Asian American Chamber of Commerce held it’s annual business awards and this year the theme was “Jewels of Asia”. It was a wonderful way to honor Asian American business leaders who have made contributions to our community. A big group of local leaders attended including Fairfax County Sheriff Stacey Kincaid and Fairfax County Supervisor Sharon Bulova. I was honored to emcee an event that really makes me proud. Shout out to Grace Han Wolf and Jenet Ahn for putting together another successful show! Photos by Joey Darley.

Why Disney on Ice is Skate Great!

I had a night of fabulous flashbacks. I remember going to Disney on Ice as a kid when I lived in Texas. Unexpectedly I had the feelings of excitement come back when I took Adora this week. It was really weird. I found myself watching the show (which was beautiful by the way) and getting lost in song. Once again I remember what it was like when I would listen to “When you wish upon a star” and the daydreaming would set in. I haven’t felt that way in a long time. So while this was a night for Adora see her favorite friends and princesses… I found it was also one that had me traveling back in time. It was real fun to see the magic working all over again. My favorite part was the It’s a Small World act and Pinocchio. The show captivated Adora and her best friend Reese. It kept their attention even under a sugar high of cotton candy! The show runs through Monday February 17th.. you can get tickets here. Watch a sneak peak of what you’ll see here.

Join us: Red, Heart & Soul Gala

Once again.. I’m happy to be part of Devotion to Children’s annual RED, HEART & SOUL Fall Gala Benefit. The event takes place Tuesday, November 12, at The Ritz Carlton of Tyson’s Corner.

RED, HEART & SOUL is the culmination of DTC’s year-long efforts to raise funds and create awareness for its programs and initiatives, which supports quality childcare and preschool programs for young children from deserving economically challenged families.

Attire will be red – a RED, HEART & SOUL tradition – or black tie optional.

DTC’s largest annual fundraiser has matured from a small dinner gathering at Tran Lauer’s home in 2002, which brought in just over $3,000, to a major charity event, with this year’s Gala being held at the Ritz Carlton of Tyson’s Corner. Last year’s Gala raised more than $100,000, and welcomed over 400 guests.

Tickets are available to the public for $250 each by calling DTC at 703-255-2284 or through the DTC web site at www.devotiontochildren.org. For information regarding corporate and media sponsorship packages, please contact Ban Tran at Ban@devotiontochildren.org or Rosemary Tran Lauer at rosemary@devotiontochildren.org
