Spring it on! With Sugar

The snow is melting and there’s no turning back now. What better way to say “Spring come on!” than with spring cookies. With my little helper Adora we hosted a cookie decorating workshop at Wildfire at Tysons Galleria. Highlights of the event is seeing so many friends and meeting new people.. and also benefiting Food for Others. FFO helps provide food for those who can’t afford it living in Fairfax County. I love being able to teach my daughter about giving back while she is young and so impressionable. She really had fun and felt she was doing something good. Thanks to everyone who came out!

First visit to “Four Sisters”

What I love about my girlfriends.. they love not only to eat.. but they like to try new places and foods! This time we chose the highly talked about Four Sisters at the new shopping center in Merrifield Virginia known as the Mosaic District.
We started off with a few orders of Goi Cuon (Fresg garden shrimp & pork rolls) and Cha Gio (Crispy Pork Spring Rolls). Being pregnant.. I was really loving the fried rolls this time around. Might I add.. there was not one roll left– they went like hot cakes.
Thank goodness we had our friend Vi with us. She’s Vietnamese and knows all the dishes and helped us order. I stuck with my traditional favorite.. the Beef Pho. Some of my girlfriends ventured out and tried the Caramelized Fish Claypot. Lettuce Wraps were popular too. Some of my girlfriends brought their kids.. and chicken fried rice was a good choice for them.
Check out my 6 second Pho… courtesy Vine!

The space was perfect, parking was easy and free! Really enjoyed the staff who were friendly and attentive.. especially for a big party like ours. As for pricing.. not bad: Dishes ranged from $8- $15. Apps started at $4.25.

For the Dogs!

It’s that time of year again. Fashion for Paws is right around the corner. It’s one of the best events in the area in my opinion. I’ve loved being a part of it in the past.. .walking with Atticus for a great cause. Well this year charity models are challenged to raise $5,000 to walk the runway. Dr. Alex Naini held a mini auction at her office and it was great to see so many come out and support her and little Kingston. All money raised goes to the Washington Humane Society. They do such an amazing job with rescuing and helping animals in  need in the area. Some pictures by Kipp Burgoynek

Bring on the Southern Style

No one can argue it was spectacular weather this weekend. It was perfect for our Shrimp and Grits Kids party with girlfriends. Mimosas, pink lemonade, cucumber sandwiches had us ready for Spring! My sister Jenny went all out and made some specialized dessert– Pulitzer’s Pink Fluff, Sour Patch Grapes and tea cookies galore. It was awesome to have so many of my mama friends stop by on a sunny Sunday afternoon. We chatted and ooooed and ahhhed over the adorable smock, monogrammed and seer sucker clothing! Our girl Kere also brought the bling.. debuting Stella & Dot’s latest styles! Shout out to my friend Shannon who hosted at her gorgeous house!

There was great stuff from Bella Bliss too! I got this for Adora for 4th of July!

Adora’s Little Red 2nd Birthday!

I love themes. Even when we had very little growing up we used our imaginations to create themes during holidays and milestones. Now that I’m older and have a little girl of my own.. it’s even more fun. Adora turned two this week and we decided to throw her a Little Red Riding Hood birthday party. I thought it was the perfect theme for a winter birthday… a lot of red and woodsy stuff! So into the woods we went and were so delighted when all our friendly creatures from across the land came out.

A month before the big day I did a lil photo shoot with the talented Janette Kim who specializes in portrait photography. We got these shots in 5 minutes. I knew I’d want to put pictures of Adora up at the party.

Sweets and Treats. My sister Tricia made this banner with wooden letters. It’s my favorite thing!! I got most of the garland, flowers, moss and glass containers at craft stores. The cake stand is an old cranberry crate.

Black Forest Cake Pops also by Edibles Incredibles. Check out the tree stump cake pop stand and cupcake stump. They were made by The Gypsy Bird.. I love all of her customized work on Etsy.

After I saw some of their treats at another party I asked Juju Sweetz if they could do something with the theme. I adore what they came out with!

Savvy Treats did these cute toadstool tarts.. the went more like hot cakes!

I found nuts.com was the best for getting color coordinated candy! Brown M&Ms, red gummy bears.. caramel popcorn. Finding snacks was a one stop shop!

I’m obsessed with personalized napkins… ask my family.

I don’t cook. It’s amazing how you can dress Domino’s up on a platter 🙂

Fries with truffle oil and sea salt– to go with the whole theme.

And soon she’ll be Mrs.

I can’t believe it. My baby sister Jenny is finally getting married! We gathered to toast the bride-to-be at one of our favorite places.. Paradise Springs Winery. It was a perfect Fall day to raise a glass for our favorite cheer coach. There was live music, wine and cheese to feed an army and just wonderful spirits all around! Congratulations Jenny.. we can’t wait to watch you walk down the aisle. CHEERS TO YOU!

Halloween festivities before Frankenstorm

This year Halloween festivities happened early. With Sandy on the way.. there’s no choice. The so-called Frankenstorm is sure to put a damper on holiday plans. I know we’ll be trading in our costumes for rain gear in the coming days. Be safe everyone!

Healthy teeth tips and spots to avoid

Dr. Alex Naini stopped by News4 to talk about the importance of brushing, flossing and avoiding cavity causing culprits! Dr. Alex says if you can’t brush after a meal.. chew gum. She also suggest parents buy water with fluoride for the kids. It’s often hidden at the store.. but she says it’s there. Check out more great tips to keep the mouths happy in our interview below. You can follow Dr. Alex on twitter too.

Throwing a Little Man Bow Tie Baby Shower

Hand made bow ties wrap mason jars

My sisters and I joke that if we just quit our jobs we could probably open up the best little party planning boutique. We all are totally Type A.. rigidly organized and very detailed when it comes to planning anything. Did I ever tell you about the time my older sis sent me her family’s christmas gift registry?

We were so excited to host a baby shower for my sister Jenny as she prepares to welcome her new “little man” Knox to the world. My sister Tricia, Jenny’s best friend Kristin and I threw her a bow tie themed baby shower. It was held in the beautiful Virginia Room at the Washington Golf and Country Club. The color scheme matches the nursery… navy, white and kelly green.

Jenny with AOII sisters Javen and Ashley

Upon arrival everyone got a handmade bow tie.

Instead of doing a guest book I got this fabulous idea after asking for baby shower ideas on Facebook. Erica Frendach contacted me and told me about these baby wish lists she makes. Every guest fills in the blank to very simple questions like “I hope you aren’t afraid of _____ !” The guest signs it with love and eventually all entries will be bound into a wish book for the baby when they get older. We read some of them out loud and they were both touching and hilarious! Made by Prince Frederick Graphics and Printing

Little helpers: Baby Adora and cousins Caelyn and Liam were dressed for the occasion. I got these tutus and matching bow tie shirts through Lakesha Cole of Tutee Swank. She can customize a tutu for any event.

Liam is going through a phase where he won’t go anywhere without a superhero cape. I had this Green Lantern cape made by Little Shepsters and found a customized plaid bow tie stitched tee at Chickadee Station.

The dessert bar was sweet and simple. Vintage books in shades of green were props. The caramel white ribbon cake and navy lemon cake pops were fresh from Edibles Incredibles in Reston. There was also French pistachio macarons, old fashion lollipops and unbelievably good homemade white cupcakes by Critters and Crayons.

For games we just passed ribbon around and asked people to guess Jenny’s bump size. We also handed out baby scratch off tickets… and there were 6 lucky winners.

From quilts to onesies handmade gifts were a hit!
