WWPR Emerging Leaders 2012

Washington Women in Public Relations (WWPR) named Olivia Doherty, Laura Hornbuckle and Jennifer Myers winners of the 2012 Emerging Leaders Awards (ELA). The third annual ELA honors rising stars, ages 23-30, in the public relations and communications field for their professional accomplishments. I want to say a big thanks to the board for allowing me to share my thoughts on grooming our future leaders in the communication biz!

We’ve got some colleagues to congratulate tonight! They walked away winners and with EMMY in hand at the 53rd National Capital Emmy Awards. Hat’s off to:

  • Best Sports Anchor: Brett Haber (he’s won this thing 5 years straight!)
  • Feature News report serious series: Human Trafficking by Andrea McCarren, Carl Gottlieb, Felix Ortiz and Larry Sindass

In other awards… Best Newscast went to WRC/NBC4 for a 5PM show while Best Anchor went to Steve Chenevey from FOX5. Chris Van Cleave at ABC7 picked up a statue for Best Reporter.

Rhee honored at Asian American Gala

This year’s annual Asian American Chamber of Commerce gala spotlighted Asian Americans who are making a difference in their community. Master Jhoon Rhee also known as the Father of American Taekwondo was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Rhee is credited for introducing this martial art to the US in the 1950′s. Local non-profits like Devotion to Children also received awards. Watch video from the event on wusa9.com

DC's '30 Under 30' Honored

DC’s young professional powerhouses gathered under one roof for a big night of recognition, the annual ‘The Power 30 Under 30′ awards.

SneakerBall 2010: Long gowns, laces up!

Tuxedos, gowns…and sneakers? Star athletes, fans and philanthropists laced up their sneaks and headed to the National Building Museum on Tuesday to celebrate DC’s best in sports. SneakerBall 2010 honored former University of Maryland basketball player Greivis Vasquez as the Sportsperson of the Year. The gala was put on by the Greater Washington Sports Alliance.  Full story..

Stars Salute Troops and DC's Skincando

Hats off to our friend Sara Damelio who’s Skincando ’Combat Ready Balm’ was chosen for the gift bags at this year’s Daytime Emmy Awards in Las Vegas.  Everyone from Wayne Brady, Marie Osmond, Alex Trebek and David Copperfield gave Sara praise.. and took time to send special messages to those who serve!

Fern Mallis received the Elements of Fashion Legacy Award during the Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce‘s first annual ‘State of Style Awards’ at the Hart Senate Building. Following the awards a panel including Mallis and local designers Tala Rassi, Tashia Senn and Evelyn Brooks discussed DC fashion issues on industry, politics and resources. The State of Style Awards recognize leaders and emerging professionals making a difference in the fashion industry here in Washington. Creator of 'NY Fashion Week' to be honored in DC

Fashion power player Fern Mallis, President of Fern Mallis LLC, VP of IMG Fashion and creator of  New York Fashion Week will be honored on Capitol Hill this Thursday May 20th. Join us.

The Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce Hosts the First Annual State of Style Awards & Advocacy Day and I’ll be emceeing and moderating the event.  The annual State of Style awards reception and advocacy day brings together the efforts of major national trade organizations, non-profits, industry veterans and designers involved in the development and preservation of the American fashion industry.  To register for Advocacy day forums, meetings and activities on May 20, 2010 please RSVP at: government@gwfcc.org

“Avatar” and the war-on-terror thriller “The Hurt Locker” lead the Academy Awards with nine nominations each. 

AC/AP: The Nominees for Best Picture are Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, and Up In The Air.

Best Actress Nominees: Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), Helen Mirren (The Last Station), Carey Mulligan (An Education), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious), and Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia).

Best Actor Nominees: Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), George Clooney (Up in the Air), Colin Firth (A Single Man), Morgan Freeman (Invictus), Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker).
