It was more like a lunch.. but that’s how us at News4 Today like to celebrate special moments. It was very sweet to have my dear friend Eun organize a little get together to toast baby Bob. The crew met up at Cactus Cantina for some guac, chips, fajitas and fun. We even had a couple of Bob’s future “boys” drop in. Thank you to everyone for all the support.. I’m gonna miss you guys while on maternity leave. I’d like to say I’m not gonna miss the hours I’ll likely still be up during those ungodly hours on feeding duty!
Let’s here it for the little patriots to be. Earlier this week I visited Ft. Washington for Operation Homefront’s Star Spangled Babies Shower. It honored 50 Military Moms to Be. We had a blast playing some fun games the whole family got in on. Door prizes including a car seat and stroller set were exciting to give away. We also had guest speakers talking about healthy nutrition for mom and baby. The expecting moms all got a great basket of goodies for their little one. There was even a bag just for mom too. I love events like this because it really provides a lot of much needed support. Many of these women have husbands who are serving abroad… or in one case recovering at Walter Reed.
My sisters and I joke that if we just quit our jobs we could probably open up the best little party planning boutique. We all are totally Type A.. rigidly organized and very detailed when it comes to planning anything. Did I ever tell you about the time my older sis sent me her family’s christmas gift registry?
We were so excited to host a baby shower for my sister Jenny as she prepares to welcome her new “little man” Knox to the world. My sister Tricia, Jenny’s best friend Kristin and I threw her a bow tie themed baby shower. It was held in the beautiful Virginia Room at the Washington Golf and Country Club. The color scheme matches the nursery… navy, white and kelly green.
Upon arrival everyone got a handmade bow tie.
Instead of doing a guest book I got this fabulous idea after asking for baby shower ideas on Facebook. Erica Frendach contacted me and told me about these baby wish lists she makes. Every guest fills in the blank to very simple questions like “I hope you aren’t afraid of _____ !” The guest signs it with love and eventually all entries will be bound into a wish book for the baby when they get older. We read some of them out loud and they were both touching and hilarious! Made by Prince Frederick Graphics and Printing
Little helpers: Baby Adora and cousins Caelyn and Liam were dressed for the occasion. I got these tutus and matching bow tie shirts through Lakesha Cole of Tutee Swank. She can customize a tutu for any event.
Liam is going through a phase where he won’t go anywhere without a superhero cape. I had this Green Lantern cape made by Little Shepsters and found a customized plaid bow tie stitched tee at Chickadee Station.
The dessert bar was sweet and simple. Vintage books in shades of green were props. The caramel white ribbon cake and navy lemon cake pops were fresh from Edibles Incredibles in Reston. There was also French pistachio macarons, old fashion lollipops and unbelievably good homemade white cupcakes by Critters and Crayons.

For games we just passed ribbon around and asked people to guess Jenny’s bump size. We also handed out baby scratch off tickets… and there were 6 lucky winners.

Enjoy the gift of life sister.
My sister is expecting her first baby in August and I’m helping plan the shower. We’re gonna do a preppy Little Man theme.. complete with bow ties and color scheme of navy, kelly green and white. By the way… I’ve almost gone bankrupt on ETSY planning this thing but it’s so much fun.
So here’s my question. I’m not big on baby shower games… and she isn’t either. I feel we need to do something for the guest though. Here’s what I have so far for the expected crowd of 30+.
- Guess her baby bump– the string game where you guess how big around she is with bump
- Baby shower Lottery Tickets– scratch off and reveal if you are the winner
Please share any non-cheesy games that would work and would be suitable for a big crowd. Thanks so much!!
Here’s a sneak peak at the invite I had made by the fabulous gals at Posh Paperie. I also ordered green vintage books and a yellow hobnail cake stand. Just some of the fun stuff to expect at the party!
No… not #2! Don’t even go there people. My friend Vi is having a baby very soon and we all got together to celebrate little Gavin. It was the cutest shower thrown by Vi’s sister Tien and friend Peachy in Stone Ridge Virginia. I loved the ‘Candy Bar’ and catching up with so many sorority sisters from George Mason. It’s so funny to see how far so many of us have come from frat house to housewife and mom.
I cannot even begin to tell you how overwhelmed with emotion I am with all the support I’ve gotten from friends, family and co-workers over the last 8 months. My sisters Jenny and Tricia threw me a beautiful shower at good friend Dr. Alex’s Potomac home.
It was more than perfect– it was as I told the crowd– a room filled with so much love. Wish I could post the hundreds of pictures and special moments captured by REVAMP.com’s Daniel Swartz and Rita Lawrence with Bitsy Baby Photography. Please check out their galleries. Sweet thanks to Frosting: A Cupcakery for sending devilishly good dessert. No cupcake was left behind. Shout out to the gorgeous Lauren Von Der Pool and staff with green catering company Von Der Pool Gourmet. I didn’t learn til after the party that the ‘beef wontons’ were vegan! I would’ve never known. They were delicious!
The best part of all? Seeing so many women from different phases of my life- high school, college, SC, DC, News, philanthropy and mamas-to-be coming together to help me celebrate my first step into motherhood. Thank you everyone from me and baby “A”. Read more about the shower at REVAMP.com where Leigh Macdonald wrote a very kind recap of the party.
A glance at some gifts…
I have to admit the hubby (like most men) wasn’t so hot on the idea of joining me for a ‘baby shower’ when he first heard about it. BUT his opinion soon changed after he realized that it was more like a mini party, a time to show off the wife’s belly and drink a beer with good friends and catch up. Special thanks to all our amazing couples and friends in Columbia, SC who put together the beautiful evening at ‘The Heritage’ on Senate. It was wonderful! Special thanks to our gracious hosts… for the party and the beautiful pack ‘n’ play below, now standing by in the baby’s nursery .Back to the idea of the ‘Couples Shower’ I’m hearing more and more people are doing this. I personally really like the idea. It’s really fun to share the experience with the other half.
Big thanks to the hosts: Lisa Hockenberry and Chris Livingston, Jackie Faye Burton, Jennifer and Jim Bowie, Lauren and Kerry Davis, Lori and Wade Douroux, Kim and Hobbs Goodwin, Marne and John Jenkins, Lynsey and John Jordan, Steven Juk, Laura and David Rembert and Jennifer and Alan Wilson
Who says the tooth fairy doesn’t exist?
We have an army of them watching over our baby! Thank you to the ladies of Ellis, Green and Jenkins in Columbia, SC for throwing a baby shower for hubby and me. We had the best time ever! Chick-fil-A, Petit Fours from Tiffany’s and wonderful things for the baby-on-the-way made it a day to remember.
