On the day you turned 5

I woke up extra early so I could watch you sleep a few minutes longer before heading to work. I have to be honest… I’m a little sad I won’t be there the moment you open your big brown eyes and realize you are FINALLY five! You’ve been waiting for this moment your whole life…so you tell me. I just want to say how much I’ve grown to love you always asking what we’re doing tomorrow even when I doubt I’ll make it through that day. I’ll never forget that time in the car when I tried to hide tears from you but somehow you knew… and without a question offered to fill my bucket. And I will always remember when you threatened to run away this year and I found a picture of you and me holding hands in your getaway bag. The stories could go on but the bottomline is your heart is so big and ours are overflowing because of it. Happy birthday sweet angel. We love you.

Derby themed birthday party

recently my son Bob became obsessed with horses so it was easy coming up with a theme for a second birthday. It just so happens his party fell on the day of the Belmont Stakes and what became a historic day with American Pharoah winning the Triple Crown. We took the family out in horse country and the beautiful Salamander Resort equestrian center was a great place for the pony party! (party notes below at very bottom past photos)

My daughter helped me paint these plastic horses and jockeys!

I mixed everything the mini bottles with ginger ale and lime  and poured it back in!

Found these little grass cubes at Michael’s.

Found drawer and moss at Michael’s. Used foam underneath so they’d stick!

My sister led this fun and easy craft!

American Pharoah who?

The Great Zucchini was beyond GREAT! The kids love him!

Our Prince is 2

“In other words, from your very first day, you were chosen to glow in a very big way! With your crown made of glittering, high-flying things, you’ve got wind in your pocket, your wishes have wings. Your crown is your best friend forever, by far. it tells the story of just who you are. That’s why every night, when i put you to bed, I’m careful to kiss the crown on your head.” Happy birthday baby. I love you.

Sleeping Beauty Birthday Party

My daughter recently turned four and are you shocked it wasn’t a Frozen birthday party? She actually is in love with Aurora. She names her baby dolls Aurora.. she wants to dress like Aurora and she is a huge fan of the flying fairy godmothers. Adora also adores pink so it made for a fitting theme to celebrate her big 4.  Holidays have always been huge in my family and birthdays are right at the top. Another year of being here.. another year to look forward to. Birthdays… although some dread them.. think about it.. it’s really a beautiful thing. We should be thankful every time we get one 😉  As for this year’s party.. it was a true team effort. From painting the frames and making the centerpieces to deciding on desserts (glitter popcorn was a must!) Adora had a hand in almost everything. Here’s how we celebrated 4… Once upon a dream.. oh and they lived happily ever after.. I promise.

Bob’s Neverland 1st Birthday Party

“To live will be an awfully big adventure.” ~ Peter Pan

As Baby Bob turned one we thought it’d be fun to encourage everyone to “never grow up” at least for a day. While this milestone is one to celebrate it’s a reminder of just how fast time really does fly by.  At Bob’s Neverland more than dreams were born. There was face paint, balloons, Tinkerbell and even a real baby alligator! A magical day indeed.

NL tableYou know they say “When the first baby laughed for the first time, its laugh broke into a thousand pieces, and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies.”IMG_2368Adora  filled the mason jars aka fairy house with moss. We dropped a fairy in each and glued a butterfly on top. We made one for all the girls at the party. The best part was when she stopped and said “Mom I LOVE helping you!”

Big day to be born!

So today is a historic day as Will and Kate welcome a little prince, heir to the throne! But there’s an even bigger birthday to celebrate in our family.  We call him Saint Ren (the man had three daughters and chin aka wife) but to the rest of the world he’s known as our dad. Happy birthday daddy. We are so lucky to have you in our lives. What better way to celebrate than lighting your fave– an apple fritter! We love you.

Great St. Pat’s

I think St. Patty’s is the best day to have a birthday. Everyone is always in such a fun and festive mood. It started with big chocolate cake and cookies for breakfast thanks to the my awesome morning friends at News4.  You can see the boys got into the St Pat’s spirit too.

Then after work it was all about a long nap and then spending the day with my family. We did a little shopping and then got together for dinner and laughs. Hope everyone had a great holiday… I can’t wait until next year when I can really celebrate with some brew like the rest of you!

Some shoe shopping

Nephew Knox came out to celebrate

Everyone had a jolly old time!

It’s CHIN’S Day!

Happy birthday CHIN! It’s my momma’s birthday and we celebrated with a homemade southern brunch. My sister Jenny cooked up some good shrimp ‘n’ grits, corn fritters and apple turnovers! We love you mom. You’re as beautiful as ever!

Even Atticus enjoyed the party.. he may have scored a table scrap or two

Bon Chon Birthday

Nothing says happy birthday like double fried Korean chicken. If you haven’t been to Bon Chon you’re missing out. It’s a “must-do” for anyone living in the metro area. They have restaurants in Centreville and Fairfax Virginia and one out in Ellicott City Maryland. You have to come hungry so don’t eat a lot before hand if you plan to visit. Know that when you order it will be at least 35 minutes before your chicken will be fried and fried (yes that’s double fried) and ready!

They do have more than chicken.. traditional Korean dishes like bulgogi and bi bim bap BUT you HAVE to at least try a leg. The wings or drumsticks come in two flavors. A soy sauce garlic glaze which is my fave.. or if you can handle hot.. there’s a spicy option. Can you feel my passion.

This post comes right after we celebrated my sister Jenny’s birthday there. Extra awesome: there’s a Sweet Frog next door at the Centreville location. Needless to say we had to be rolled out of the parking lot.

The After Party

Adora’s Little Red Riding Hood Birthday Party

I love themes. Even when we had very little growing up we used our imaginations to create themes during holidays and milestones. Now that I’m older and have a little girl of my own.. it’s even more fun. Adora turned two this week and we decided to throw her a Little Red Riding Hood birthday party. I thought it was the perfect theme for a winter birthday… a lot of red and woodsy stuff! So into the woods we went and were so delighted when all our friendly creatures from across the land came out. Special thanks to Alex Naini and Joey Darley for all the great photos!

A month before the big day I did a lil photo shoot with the talented Janette Kim who specializes in portrait photography. We got these shots in 5 minutes. I knew I’d want to put pictures of Adora up at the party.

Sweets and Treats. My sister Tricia made this banner with wooden letters. It’s my favorite thing!! I got most of the garland, flowers, moss and glass containers at craft stores. The cake stand is an old cranberry crate.

Storybook cake by Edibles Incredibles in Reston

Black Forest Cake Pops also by Edibles Incredibles. Check out the tree stump cake pop stand and cupcake stump.  They were made by The Gypsy Bird.. I love all of her customized work on Etsy.

After I saw some of their treats at another party I asked Juju Sweetz if they could do something with the theme. I adore what they came out with!

Savvy Treats did these cute toadstool tarts.. the went more like hot cakes!

I found was the best for getting color coordinated candy! Brown M&Ms, red gummy bears.. caramel popcorn. Finding snacks was a one stop shop!

I’m obsessed with personalized napkins… ask my family.

I don’t cook. It’s amazing how you can dress Domino’s up on a platter 🙂

Fries with truffle oil and sea salt– to go with the whole theme.

Do you recognize the Big Bad Wolf? I have a very generous co-anchor. Richard Jordan deserves a year worth of I-O-Us for this one! He was awesome… although he did scare some of the children.
