Helping the innocent

In my job I have seen some pretty unbelievable things. Many of them involve children. Physical, mental and sexual abuse is happening in homes all around us. It’s hard to think about but for the innocent children it cannot be ignored. When I learned about Safe Spot and how it provides a safe haven for young victims in Fairfax County I knew it was a group I had to support. They are so passionate about helping these victims. In my eyes, they are real heroes. I was honored to emcee their annual Passion for Fashion charity fashion show at Bloomingdale’s at Tysons Corner. Safe Spot is always looking for people to join their mission. Get more information here at safespotfairfax.org (Photos by Jan Miller)

Join me and a fabulous crowd of attendees as we unite together for a day of fashion and philanthropy to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

St. Jude leads the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.  Located in Memphis, Tennessee, the center is at the cutting-edge of the latest medicine and research in life-threatening pediatric diseases, such as cancer, all while freeing families from the biggest burden in getting life-saving healthcare: the cost.

Events like the HOF are so important to the continued success of St. Jude because the center receives the majority of it’s funding from generous donors.   With a $2 million a day hof1operating cost, every dollar counts and the results are evident today as St. Jude has increased the survival rates for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) from 4% (in 1962) to 94%.

Summer Fashion Series Continues

It’s here… the next show in April Yvonne’s Signature Style Series, partnered with the Capella Georgetown, D.C., featuring Calypso St. Barth will occur on May 14th from 12pm – 2pm on the Rooftop Lounge of the hotel.

MORE: Get Tickets

On the heels of a sold-out show in March with Elie Tahari, April has brought in one of her favorite luxury resort wear brands right in time for the warmer weather! “Calypso St. Barth is a must-go for me personally and for my clients because they have perfect pieces to pack for warm weather getaways and I always find beautifully unique items,” said April.

So what is it you ask? Well, it all started when April wanted to bring a portion of what she experiences during Fashion Week in New York here to DC, so she created the Style Series, where by partnering with designers and luxury brands, April conducts sold-out fashion events allowing her following to experience first-hand her inherent passion and devotion to fashion. In addition to being one of DC’s top fashion stylists, April is also the Resident Stylist at the Capella DC, so this partnership was a match made in heaven for her series.

The Calypso St. Barth show will take place on the exclusive Rooftop of the Capella DC, which offers stunning views of our beautiful city…the perfect backdrop for the informal presentation April will conduct showcasing some of her favorite looks from Calypso St. Barth’s latest collection as guests enjoy a delicious lunch and cocktail from the hotel’s restaurant, The Grill Room.

Following, guests will be able to shop on-site all the looks April presents during the show and receive on-hand fashion advice from April and representatives from Calypso St. Barth.

Plus, each ticket purchase qualifies you in for a chance to win some AMAZING raffle prizes, like: a Calypso St. Barth dress, valued at $495; a Beauty Class for you and 5 friends at Blue Mercury Georgetown; brunch for two at The Grill Room; or a 1-hour personal shopping trip with April Yvonne.

Finally, a portion of the ticket proceeds will benefit a charity that is very near and dear to April – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, whose mission is to find a cure for children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases through research and treatment and where no family every pays St. Jude for anything.

Here’s a peek at some of the looks you will see and shop at the show:

DC Couple Changes Name to What??

Changing your name in the name of changing the world. This morning I introduced you to one DC couple who vows to do it.

This is not a joke… Jeff and Jessica say they will change their last name to Van Squigglebottoms if they raise $1 million in the fight against poverty.

They just launched a social media campaign with a goal to make the million bucks by the end of the year. As of this morning.. they’ve banked a little more than $4,000.

MORE: Support the Squigglebottom’s

So far, their real name is safe but they say they’re already preparing to change their social security cards, passports pretty much everything just in case!

We catch up with the future Mr. & Mrs. Squigglebottoms soon.. stay tuned!

Walk for the Animals!

Here’s a wonderful effort to support! The Washington Humane Society is behind the DC Walk for the Animals & Pet-A-Palooza. 100% of the proceeds stay in the DC area to help fund Washington Humane Society programs and services such as: local adoption programs, spay/neuter, Humane Law Enforcement, Humane Education, and behavior and training classes.

My friend Sumita has been a loyal supporter! You can donate by visiting this page!

Easter Seals teams up with the Circus!

“Not only did we spend a great evening at the circus,
I knew that my gift would make a difference every day.”–Past DonorChildren playing with clowns

The Easter Seals Bright Stars Campaign had a fun night with thousands of children and adults with disabilities at a private performance of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
Because of the generosity of many area individuals, families and organizations, the Bright Stars Campaign raises thousands of dollars that help provide help, hope and answers for 15,000+ people with disabilities and their families.

For the Dogs!

It’s that time of year again. Fashion for Paws is right around the corner. It’s one of the best events in the area in my opinion. I’ve loved being a part of it in the past.. .walking with Atticus for a great cause. Well this year charity models are challenged to raise $5,000 to walk the runway. Dr. Alex Naini held a mini auction at her office and it was great to see so many come out and support her and little Kingston. All money raised goes to the Washington Humane Society. They do such an amazing job with rescuing and helping animals in  need in the area. Some pictures by Kipp Burgoynek

A silent auction will be part of the day’s festivities too! For sponsorship opportunities, tables or tickets visit http://chanceforlife.net or email info@chanceforlife.net
