Turkey day prep

This Thanksgiving Dinner thing is stressing me out.

It’s no secret.. I don’t cook. But this Thanksgiving I’m gonna try. I’m gonna make one dish– macaroni ‘n’ cheese. My friend Luanne gave me a recipe and was kind enough to answer my last minute emergency texts form the store… what kind of pasta.. what kind of cheese?!?!? The biggest reaction I got was from the guy at Whole Foods after I asked… where can I find butter? Following his laugh.. I had to follow up… “I don’t cook much.” So wish me luck…. and to everyone out there scrambling to get it all done before Turkey day .. have a Happy one!

Improv at the Correspondents Dinner

What happens when a cameraman throws a party? A lot of wine, beer and laughs is what we found out. Hats off to CNN’s Jay McMichael for chairing this year’s Congressional Correspondents Dinner.

Wayne Brady’s improv and rap using words from the crowd (you try making filibuster cool) and Prince impersonations were hilarious. Speaker John Boehner was dry but still had some funny moments. The Howard University Thunder Machine drum line was off the charts and kept the party hopping.

NBC Washington was well represented too. Special thanks to my guest Jermaine Paul, Season 2 Winner of The Voice. He was a star in the crowd.. graciously taking pictures with his Washington fans.

My guest The Voice’s Jermaine Paul with Congressman Jim Clyburn. Look for Jermaine’s single “Butterfly Kisses” which comes out Father’s Day!

Okay so my red-eye auto correct made my friends Rick Yarborough and Brian Callahan look a little beady eyed but you can still see they are handsome men. Here with Rene Marsh.

Dinner party and the pig

Nothing like some gourmet suckling pig wrapped in crackle to be a reason to congregate! I enjoyed hanging with women leaders in media and business at Art and Soul near Capitol Hill. Executive Chef Wes Morton wowed the crowd of friends with his 4 courses family style dinner. It included an heirloom melon salad and the milk fed pig with egglplant casserole. There was also a local cheese board with fresh honey comb. Apparently honey is the new thing to pair cheese with these days!

Staycation: Our visit to West Virginia

In our suite we arrived to fresh baked desserts, free bottled water and coffee.

As you may have seen from my previous post, Little Goff and I went on a little staycation in West Virginia. I highly recommend doing so to anyone who’s just itching to get out of town but really doesn’t have the time to take a week or even a weekend off for travel. It took us about an hour to get to the Hillbrook Inn Bed & Breakfast nestled in the rolling hills of Charles Town. Upon arrival at the European style country home estate we were hooked. Within seconds you realize this is a quiet place that is loud with history.. some of the English Tudor inn was constructed starting in the 1700’s. In fact George Washington use to own this land.

EXTRA: Travel for Busy Moms & Their Brood

What we found so refreshing is that among the antiques, aging books, dark wood and even an old water closet was a touch of today. We were impressed to find out that all the 6 unique rooms (we stayed in The Bamford) and 4 cottage suites had an iPad 2 in them. The Wi-Fi connection was very strong too— hence my real-time (and real funny) post on the wedding we witnessed from our patio. As for the food? The filet mignon was so tender– they only give you a butter knife to cut it. The dessert was creative. Ever had chocolate pate’? With the overnight stay you get free breakfast on the porch. I commented during breakfast that I could taste the difference in the tomatoes. They were definitely garden fresh– come to learn their produce comes from a local farm. The whole experience was more than up to our taste- it was great enough that we actually bought a gift certificate for our parents who so deserve a nice getaway!

Birthday shoes!

She had them on she was looking hot! Happy Birthday to Leigh Macdonald our NiceShoesNoDrama Queen! It was great gathering with the girls at Cafe’ Milano to celebrate. Special thanks to Kimberly Suiters for organizing it all!

White House Pet Correspondents Night

Sassy pet expert Wendy Diamond from Animal Fair magazine once again hosted her annual White House Pet Correspondents benefit. Held at Art & Soul on Capitol Hill the evening was dedicated to Pets 2 Vets or P2V– and organization that connects returning veterans with pets to help with daily task and morale. Our gals Sophie & Katherine from TLC show DC Cupcakes were there as well as John McLaughlin. We also so Bo Obama— well kind of!

What we're diggin at DC Restaurant Week

DC’s Restaurant Week is right around the corner so what are you in the mood for?!? Check out Tricia Barba’s write up for WeLoveDC.com. She taps into the hungry minds of local media to see where they’ll be cashin’ in on great 3 course cuisines. My top picks... Chef Geoff’s, WILDFIRE, Bistro Bis and Bourbon Steak. I really wanna try Blacksalt– I hear their seafood is to die for.

There are more than 200 places participating this month.. check out the DC Restaurant Week list of deals here.  Don’t worry friends who never leave VA.. there are restaurants in Virginia and Maryland taking part with specials too.

Look who's coming to dinner

I fell madly in love with these Ladies-in-Waiting plates by Balducci. There are four different ones. There’s just something about a woman who wears a ship in her hair while having afternoon tea.  I’m having a great time outfitting the new pad, plus I finally get to break out all those monogrammed wedding gifts from more than 2 years ago!
