I’m having Splashbacks

America’s favorite mermaid gets arrested at the White House. Daryl Hannah was protesting an oil pipeline expansion. As I watched her be cuffed and whisked away a couple random thoughts came to mind.

  • My childhood visit Aquarena Springs in San Marcos TX- where you could see pigs dive and an underwater mermaid show
  • “Madison” use to be an uncommon name
  • This time she wasn’t arrested for indecent exposure but can’t help but think she looks awesome at 50

It’s 5 for Kate!

5 years and going strong! Congratulations to online magazine KStreetKate for keeping DC in the know of all the great things this city has to offer. The anniversary party was held at the National Press Club.

Reflecting on the last 5 years, founder Kate Michael told the crowd that  it’s “a very long time in internet years” and she plans to keep it up. We sure hope so… here’s to looking forward to celebrating 6! Leigh Macdonald contributed to this report.

Robert Redford premieres 'The Conspirator' in DC

Robert Redford is still a hunk! It was great to see him premiere his new film he directed ‘The Conspirator’ here at the historic Ford’s Theatre.  The film that centers around the men and one woman arrested for the conspiracy surrounding President Lincoln’s murder stars Robin Wright Penn as Mary Surratt. Following the star-studded screening the cast hit the official after party hosted by Capitol File at the Newseum.  Read more and watch coverage on WUSA9 here...

Cajun Takes DC

D.C. tastemakers attended the VIP opening of The Cajun Experience restaurant! It’s the newest addition to the Dupont dining scene.

A week before Fat Tuesday the celebration couldn’t be more timely. We caught up with  Executive Chef Bryan Crosswhite who boasts he has no formal training in the kitchen… his food all comes from family traditions and passed down recipes.

Check out the story I shared on WUSA9′ s Morning Show.

Try The Cajun Experience for yourself at 1825 18th Street NW! Live music on Friday and Saturday Nights with patio seating in the Spring.

Secretly 'UNTAMED'

We took a walk on the wild side thanks to the Jete Society’s annual Dance Party.

The theme this year was ‘UNTAMED’ and it was an event that lived up to it’s name. From the saucy dancers to carnival food that included fried snickers… this party was downright HOT!

The event that benefits the Washington Ballet is co-chaired by Winston Lord and the beautiful Ashley Taylor (pictured right)

Thanks Leigh Macdonald for the pictures and video!

Lincoln: A President who's Poppin'

By Leigh Macdonald

Tomorrow evening, I’m hitting one of the hottest new night-out scenes in D.C.

Meet ArtJamz: an uncommonly creative concept by Michael M. Clements, Executive Editor of Washington Life Magazine. Last June, Clements launched ArtJamz, the first for-profit production of Genki Media LLC. Genki is a combination of the Japanese characters “Gen” and “Ki,” and it means “happy and healthy condition.” Well . . . by all accounts, it seems that Clements—through his wildly popular ArtJamz series—is indeed making meaningful strides toward the happy and healthy condition of Washingtonians.

What is ArtJamz? It’s open to anyone, online registration is easy, and ArtJammers needn’t bring a thing since Clements provides all needed materials. Indeed, upon arrival, you’ll receive a canvas (already set up on an easel, of course), paint, and materials. For the next few hours, you’ll enjoy wine, soft drinks, hors d’oeuvres, great music, and an artsy ArtJamz host. All the while, you and your fellow ArtJammers will be creating your very own original works of art. “Whoa!” you say, “I’m not an artist.” Not to worry . . . the ArtJamz sessions bring out the creative juices in even the most uncreative souls.

This weekend, ArtJamz is hosting its Lincoln Sessions. The Lincoln Sessions will take place on the 10th, 11th and 12th and will give ArtJammers a sneak peek at the highly anticipated opening of Lincoln Restaurant. Lincoln is owned and operated by Hudson Restaurant owner Alan Popovsky, and the destination will feature pop art from local artist, Maggie O’Neill.

At each of the three Lincoln Sessions, Maggie will paint alongside ArtJammers. February 10th is an invite-only affair aimed to bring in a who’s who of creative District influencers. The 11th and 12th sessions are open to anyone. By the way, Feb 12 is Abe Lincoln’s birthday, and I can’t imagine a better way to celebrate honest Abe than with ArtJamz at the city’s newest and most creative restaurant concept.

From Russia… with POP!

Pop artist SASHA stuns a crowd of more than 1,000 at A-list celebrity photographer Mike Ruiz’s birthday celebration! I’ve been a big fan of the artist since a mutual friend introduced us in February.

Not only is she talented and beautiful– she has a great heart and is so down to Earth.
