3 Day Fast: Juicing Cleanse

I wrote a while back about trying juicing. I’ve been making a lot of my own juices lately tomato, carrot, apple and celery… it’s been fun. I was talking with a colleague about a 3 day juice fast she did that she said gave her a ton of energy! I decided to try it and placed my order for the 3 day cleanse called Blueprint. It includes 6 bottles of juice a day to drink. It arrived and I refrigerated it right away. Every day I’m gonna keep a log of how it’s going:

DAY 1: I woke up and had a bottle of hot water with lemon in it to clear my system. It’s what Blueprint recommends. About an hour later I tried Juice #1. It’s a green juice with romaine, celery, cucumber, apple, spinach, kale, parsley and lemon. If you are not use to a green juice.. the taste will raise a brow and tickle your tastebuds. It’s a little tart with a greeny after taste. I admit I downed it fast to get it over with. My friend Lauren says it will get better.. you get use to it.

I went to work out and found I still had enough energy. During the workout I drank Juice #2 a pineapple and apple concoction. It was good and got me through the session. Around 5pm I started to long some solids. I had my spicy lemonade which has cayenne pepper in it. HELLO. It’s unlike any lemonade I’ve had. It was good though. I liked the burn.

So the one thing Blueprint has is a card for cheaters. It lists the things you CAN cheat with if you find yourself famished. Some of the items include a couple slices of cucumber, 1/4 of an avocado and low sodium chicken broth. I had the avocado and chicken broth. If you’re gonna cheat they say at least cheat with good stuff.

Everyone says by the time you get to your final juice of the day… a cashew milk you will say it all was worth it. I’m on Juice #5 right now and can’t wait to 6 in an hour or so. You’re suppose to give at least 1 hour between juices. Getting me by in between today… water, hot green tea and hot water with lemon.

No headaches so far…

Bonnie Bernstein ROCKs kids health

You’re use to seeing her cover the big sports story but now ESPN’s Bonnie Bernstein has taken on a new assignment- Get Kids FIT! Bonnie was in town for the ING KiDS ROCK race. She talked about this incredible program that is getting children K-6th grade moving towards a healthier lifestyle. Bonnie also offered up some excellent tips all families can consider:

  • Exercise as a family and set goals: Use the time not only to exercise, but to spend quality time with your kids. Hikes, bike rides, power walks. Makes time go by faster
  • Shop and cook together: Empower them to make healthy foods for themselves. Farmer’s markets are fun, can sample things
  • Plant a garden: Gives kids a sense of ownership… they’ll want to eat what they plant
  • Find healthy alternatives: Potato chips = apple or banana chips or Ice cream sundae = low fat yogurt + berries + fat free whipped cream + sugar free chocolate syrup
  • Spice up healthy foods: Smear of almond butter on an apple, celery, banana or put fruit salsa on chicken or fish

Hospital on wheels offer free care

Healthcare is costly and there’s a lot of people who need help in getting just the basics of care. That’s why when I found out about the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile/KIDS Mobile Medical Clinic I was so touched. The hospital on wheels rolls through some of the communities most need offering care for free year round. While visiting the Care Mobile I met some inspiring people including 6 year old Demarco. Watch my story below…

Darrell Green in the house Sunday

Hey all! One of my favorite people is in the house Sunday joining us for the 9AM show. Hall of Famer and Redskins great Darrell Green is stopping by to talk about his newest plan to get you people fit! As someone still struggling with that last 5 pounds of baby weight I am all ears. I signed up for Walk Fit Health, an online social network centered around health and wellness. I wear a pedometer and it tracks my steps (you should walk 10,000 a day!). I can log in from anywhere and set my goals, see results, track calories and even win stuff. The best part is that since its a network you friend other walkers and you can compete with them or offer them advice and support.

Tune in Sunday morning for our 9AM show on NBC4. If you have questions for Darrell let me know too! See ya in the morn.

New kids book encourages “diet”

Been wanting to write about this. Check out this new book that Barnes & Noble recommends for kiddos 6-12. It’s called Maggie Goes on  Diet and shows an overweight girl holding a small dress and looking into a mirror. Her reflection is a skinny Maggie.

The story of the 14-year-old takes her from being overweight to exercising and eating right to losing weight and becoming a soccer star at school. Good habits start early so I can see why a story like this could inspire someone to try to lead a healthier life. Critics says it sends the wrong message with the picture of Maggie holding the small dress. They say it puts more emphasis on being “skinny” rather than “healthy.”

Moved to tears

Lina with sister Katie who yawns

Every now and then you come across a story that takes your breath away. One that is so heavy on your heart that it moves you to tears. You can’t stop reading or watching it.  Sometimes they are stories of hate, the unthinkable, insurmountable strength and many times love. This is a love story like no other. Many don’t know I have an older sister who lives in Texas. I was deeply touched after she shared the story of Katie- who was born this month… with expectations she would soon die.  My sister writes…

During the months leading up to birth, most parents excitedly plan their newborn’s first photo shoot, what matching outfit will be worn home, or maybe what nursery decor will welcome their healthy baby.

Dawn and Michael made funeral arrangements. They selected a casket. They put the coroner’s number on speed dial. They ensured a priest was on stand-by so their daughter could be baptized. They explained to their five year old, that her baby sister will be born, but that she will go to Jesus quickly. They picked out a welcoming outfit. And then they picked one to bury her in.

Katie is an anencephalic baby— nearly 1 in 4,859 babies are born this way. It’s a serious neural tube defect leaving the baby without parts of her brain or skull. Katie has a fleshy notch on her head, a cleft palate, eyelids that failed to separate leaving the 4 pound angel with a bump protruding from where her left eye should be. Despite all this the pictures will show that Katie yawns, grips and even smiles. She is a true warrior. I never knew that this condition existed and have been inspired to learn more about Anencephaly.  Katie has already held on for  2 weeks… and I hope you can join me in sending your prayers to her strong family Michael, Dawn and Lina.  With that I’ll leave you with some words from my sister.. you can read more from her here

When Katie’s hardest battle is over, her warrior spirit and small body will be comforted and warmed for eternity in a blanket her mother made for her, that is now filled with the full energy of unexpected memories, undeterred faith, intense gratitude, the ripples of her movement, and transcendant love.

Floss

Um ok I’m lying. I hate to floss.. and I’m married to a dentist so imagine how those night time conversations go. However, I love finding new ways to motivate me to do things that are good for me. I am thrilled to see friend and local cosmetic dentist Dr. Alex Naini join Dr. Oz’s panel of experts. Her first piece answers the question “Do I really need to floss?”  What I love about her advice is that it is the real deal. Like when she shares most people think they brush twice daily, their teeth are clean and they have fresh breath. Dr. Alex says “People usually don’t realize that their breath stinks and a lot of times their loved ones are too nice to tell them the truth.”

As you grab for that tic-tac.. chew on this: In her article Dr. Alex says if you’re going to pick between brushing and flossing, FLOSS! She repeats, FLOSS! Curious? Read more at Dr. Oz…
