harth Opening: Hot Eats, Cool Show

The storms couldn’t put a damper on the red hot grand opening of harth, the new signature restaurant at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner. We were greeted by fire breathers and dancers. The red carpet came out for the celebration that drew hundreds of hungry Washingtonians. Guests enjoyed a sampling of what harth has to offer- food that supports local farmers! LOVIN THAT! One of my faves: Cheddar and Chives Popovers made with poached eggs, sundried tomato hollandaise and bacon jam. Loved the contrast of wood fire burning ovens and dripping ice bars in the lobby. SAKS presented an eye-pleasing show with this summer’s most stylish bikinis and big hats. The cool finale– two ice carvers jammin’ out while creating a sculpture for the audience. Loved having my sister Tricia who is visiting from Texas join me. She was a great help with Adora while I shot video.

SWEET!

A taste of Italia comes to Bethesda. We were there for the VIP Grand Opening of Vapiano on Bethesda Row. Between the ages-old  olive trees and the warm mod decor… a blend of past and present was strong in the new restaurant. Vapiano’s offers a neat set-up… celebrating the concept of mediterranean group cooking. Guests’ meals are made-to-order right before your eyes. We tried the bruschetta, warm breads, basil pasta, chicken alfredo and of course thin crust pizza. In the end.. you get a hearty affordable meal while dining among an urban upscale feel.

I’m in the kitchen with Cakelove’s Warren Brown chatting about his new book United Cakes of America The book has his own personal recipes for cakes and treats from every state, DC and Puerto Rico. We did a live segment where he showed me how to make Sweet Potato cake (Louisiana, recipe below) and revealed the juicy ingredient he puts in his creamcheese frosting! The book will be available in May.. but you can catch him and get an autograph copy at his book launch this Sunday at Politics and Prose on Connecticut at 3:30PM.
