Microsoft Makin’ Mommas

Happy mother’s day weekend! What a neat way to celebrate the holiday than with all things geek.

The Microsoft Store in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia held a very cool ‘Say Thanks to Mom’ Mother’s Day workshop last week. This workshop featured Michele McGraw, founder of “Scraps of My Geek Life” showing area moms and bloggers how to use Microsoft Paint and Photo Gallery to make Mother’s Day cards, albums, gifts, etc. Guests included Elizabeth Thorp of, Lynn Norusis of Northern Virginia Magazine, Amy Suski and Claudine Kurp (with baby Ava) of DC Metro Mom, Jessica Claire Haney of Crunchy Chewy Mama, Monica Barnette of Blueprint for Style, Elizabeth Jones of Dulles Moms, Leticia Barr of Tech Savvy Mama, Thien Kim of I’m not the Nanny, Elaine Maag of Connor and Helen Grow Up, Huffington Post tech writers, Ann Tran and Sean Gardener, Amy Mascott of Teach Mama and Kristina Schnack of PWCMoms.

Guests were given mice, gift cards and three attendees won cellphones and one lucky winner — Claudine Kurp of DC Metro Mom won a Asus Zenbook — in pink!

As a culinary surprise, attendees were given a sneak taste of Kimberly Robinson’s whoopie pies (her store “Makin’ Whoopie” will open in DC in July!)

Cover Shoot: Northern Virginia Magazine

Looking for the best local boutiques this holiday season… make sure you grab a copy of the latest issue of Northern Virginia Magazine. I had a blast shooting the cover with an amazing team. I spent the day at Current Boutique in Clarendon with very talented photographer Jonathan Timmes. We were joined by magazine Art Director Elisa Glass, Lynn Norusis the Editor-in-Chief and make-up artist DeShae. Cheers to shopping local this holiday season… and Northern Virginia Magazine for making that easy!

Pumpkin Carving Class

Today we hosted a pumpkin carving class at Wildfire Restaurant at Tysons Galleria. It was super fun… and some even came in costumes. There were kids there of all ages… ranging from 10 months (Adora!) to tweens. Executive Chef Eddie Ishaq let everyone pick out their pumpkin… within a matter of minutes everyone was carving away. It was really easy for rookies like me (I use to paint the outside of the pumpkin). There was a variety of stencils to choose from… I decided on the spooky ghost. Oh the best part? Lotsa lotsa Halloween candy  and roasted pumpkin seeds were center pieces on each table! For future kid classes visit Wildfire online.

Washington Journalism & Media Conference 2011

Some of the best stuff I get to do is return to my alma mater the great George Mason University to work with students interested in media. I recently sat on a panel with fellow Patriots who have gone on to have successful careers in journalism- all kinds. As part of the Washington Journalism & Media Conference that draws hundreds of high schoolers from across the Country, we got the chance to share stories about breaking into the business.

Dishing out the dirt on what it took to get where they’re at were film critic Kevin ‘BDK’ McCarthy from 106.7 The Fan, BJ Koubaroulis the CEO of Synthesis Multimedia Production and Lynn Norusis, managing editor of Northern Virginia Magazine. Best of luck to all the great students we met… there’s many with a bright future ahead of them!
