Good places to pick a pumpkin

cf familyFall is filled with invigorating things! Scarves, crunchy leaves, pumpkin spice, apple cider the list is endless  when it comes to things we love about now. We recently went to Cox Farms in Centreville VA to check out it’s new Enchanted Forest and pick some pumpkins. Here’s list of other great places to check out depending where you live.

Cox Farms Centreville VA

Great Country Farms Bluemont VA

Butler’s Orchard Germantown MD

Waters Orchard Germantown MD

Marker Miller Orchards Winchester VA

If you go to Cox Farms be sure to try the slides (as an adult too!), the apple cider, take the hayride and check out the new Enchanted Forest. You can walk the trail at night too which will make it extra spooky. We loved the sleeping dragon along the way and the upside house. Oh, don’t forget to stop by the Market Place for your pumpkin too!

DC, MD & VAQ Snow Plow Trackers

Digging out of the snow goes digital across our region.
VDOT introduces the Snow Plow Tracker online you can see in real time when the trucks are clearing around your neighborhood in Northern Virginia.Plug in your address.. and even get the option to take a look at LIVE traffic cams nearby too.
Maryland doesn’t have a statewide plow tracker– but Howard County does.Their tracker has a legend that allows you to see whats been salted, plowed or both.
In DC there’s a pretty accurate “Snow Response Reporting System“. It isn’t a live GPS tracker, but it does update frequently. I plugged in our station’s address and got an immediate animation with where the plows were overnight. The live camera feature of local roads and their conditions pop up too. Just a few tools you can use at home now as we get through another storm. We’re posting all this at nbcwashington.com. Search PLOW.

Learning how to crack crabs

It’s a shame.

I call this place home and I still don’t know how to crack a Maryland crab. In fact, it’s why I won’t order them or lobster.. unless they are pre-cracked. It’s not because I’m lazy… it’s because it’s intimidating.

Fear no more… Chef John Shields of PBS Food’s Coastal Cooking give me a lesson in Crab cracking 101 at Wildfire Restaurant!

RECIPE: Maryland Crabcakes

For recipes check out John’s website. If you have a good one or any tips to the tricky business of cracking crabs.. please feel free to share!

Zaching: New Symbol in Fight Against Cancer

The strongman pose of an 18 year old  who just wanted to show his family and friends he was ok after brain surgery… is inspiring cancer patients across the country. Zach Lederer is the inspiration behind #Zaching. We caught up with him at the University of Maryland where he is the student manager for the basketball team.

Pick of the week: “Wanna score some tide?”

When people on twitter start creating hashtags from something you said in your stand-up for a news story.. well it’s gotta be good. Pat Collins doesn’t disappoint with his take on the Tide detergent thieves in Maryland.

DC Bartender Wins Nat'l Model Search (ps- he's single!)

Take one look at his picture… and do you even ask why?

Congrats to DC’s Yonas Kutlu who won the Macveneers Model search for 2010 this fall.  He used to complain of little teeth and didn’t smile with his mouth open.  When he walked into Aesthetic Dental Spa, he didn’t even know that there was something Dr. Alex could do for him.  Two visits later, he had a smile makeover with 10 Veneers.Depending on Macveneers’ ad campaign this year, you may see him in Vogue and In Style Magazines!

PICTURES: Yonas’ teeth before smile makeover

BUT you’ve probably seen him around town already. Yonas (who’s single!) is currently a bartender at The Park at 14th and has even been on the cover of  On Tap magazine as best bartender.

Newborn Photo Shoot

Photographer Moshe Zusman gave me some of the best advice prior to the birth of my baby. He said- get pictures of your newborn done immediately- everything changes so much after one week- their purplish hands and toes, pruned skin, swollen eyes. So we did. Adora wrote about it on her blog with some behind-the-scenes shots. When I saw the final pictures I cried. You want your baby to grow, to get bigger, to open their eyes but at the same time you want to remember them like this forever. You want to remember how much you stared at every little thing for hours ( like the hair on her ears) trying to understand how this was possible. That something so amazing, so real and little could come from ‘you.’  Thank you Moshe for giving us these moments to cherish always. See more pictures from the shoot at Moshe’s Blog.
