Beyond Facebook and Twitter

Sitting on my panel and staring out in the crowd and seeing people standing.. sitting on the floor.. that’s an awesome sight. It tells me that journalists are eager to find ways to connect with their viewers and readers in news ways. I loved sharing the stage with Yahoo’s social media director Angela Kim and NPR’s Elise Hu. We stayed away from sharing theories about social media and really tried to focus on some great tools to use or experiement with when reporting. Here you go:
Some tools we use:
Social Cam App– it’s free and allows you to share video and even add filters, chyrons and music. Think instagram for video. I use this when in the field reporting.. and on the desk during commercial break. I took this right before our panel started.
Public News Service– great way to find interesting story ideas from the people
VYou– let the people ask you question and you respond via video
Every Block– Free app with city documents, rentals, hyper local news, crime blotter
Jing– great app for capturing screen shots
reeldirector App- it’s final cut pro on your iPhone or iPad. I love this.
Pinterest– find a way to get your station/paper using this. The power of the repine has already been big!
To all who came out and asked great questions.. thank you!

Dinner party and the pig

Nothing like some gourmet suckling pig wrapped in crackle to be a reason to congregate! I enjoyed hanging with women leaders in media and business at Art and Soul near Capitol Hill. Executive Chef Wes Morton wowed the crowd of friends with his 4 courses family style dinner. It included an heirloom melon salad and the milk fed pig with egglplant casserole. There was also a local cheese board with fresh honey comb. Apparently honey is the new thing to pair cheese with these days!

Congrats to our dear friend and WJLA evening anchor Alison Starling on getting engaged! Her news beau NBC Correspondent Peter Alexander popped the question while they were in Paris! Alison sent me this pic (I see bling!) and says “We’re over the moon!”  Best wishes to the bride-to-be and her lucky man.

It’s 5 for Kate!

5 years and going strong! Congratulations to online magazine KStreetKate for keeping DC in the know of all the great things this city has to offer. The anniversary party was held at the National Press Club.

Reflecting on the last 5 years, founder Kate Michael told the crowd that  it’s “a very long time in internet years” and she plans to keep it up. We sure hope so… here’s to looking forward to celebrating 6! Leigh Macdonald contributed to this report.

Washington Journalism & Media Conference 2011

Some of the best stuff I get to do is return to my alma mater the great George Mason University to work with students interested in media. I recently sat on a panel with fellow Patriots who have gone on to have successful careers in journalism- all kinds. As part of the Washington Journalism & Media Conference that draws hundreds of high schoolers from across the Country, we got the chance to share stories about breaking into the business.

Dishing out the dirt on what it took to get where they’re at were film critic Kevin ‘BDK’ McCarthy from 106.7 The Fan, BJ Koubaroulis the CEO of Synthesis Multimedia Production and Lynn Norusis, managing editor of Northern Virginia Magazine. Best of luck to all the great students we met… there’s many with a bright future ahead of them!

Sweet “Georgetowner”

The weekly Georgetowner newspaper has a Mother’s Day edition and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.

What a fantastic shoot we had with Philip Berningham in his McLean studio. (right)

It was an honor considering  Philip has done portrait photography for Presidents and the Royals including the Queen and Prince Charles. Special thanks to writer Lisa Gillespie for the article.

Secretly 'UNTAMED'

We took a walk on the wild side thanks to the Jete Society’s annual Dance Party.

The theme this year was ‘UNTAMED’ and it was an event that lived up to it’s name. From the saucy dancers to carnival food that included fried snickers… this party was downright HOT!

The event that benefits the Washington Ballet is co-chaired by Winston Lord and the beautiful Ashley Taylor (pictured right)

Thanks Leigh Macdonald for the pictures and video!

The media personality who gets the most votes wins not only the coveted seat but $50,000 from America’s most POPular snack PopChips! If he wins, Tommy’s not keeping the cash. WIS-TV: Revisiting the blast from the past

While visiting family in South Carolina I decided to do a drop in at my old shop WIS-TV. It was like a big reunion. I got to see my former desk mate Dawndy who showered baby Adora with the most precious little outfit. It was so awesome seeing old work pals and sharing the new headline of my life- the baby! You know you’ve got true friends when you conveniently show up an hour before stories and anchors gotta be on-air and everyone stops to hug it out despite it being crunch time.
