Gift of Life gives free mammograms to those in need

What a beautiful gathering for the 5th annual Gift of Life Breakfast. Held at the Grand Hyatt on H Street… the crowd was full of love and leaders from the medical, business and philanthropic communities. More than 500 came out  in support of what the Capital Breast Care Center stands for. The CBCC is the only charity that is solely dedicated to giving poor women and the uninsured free mammograms and services to fight breast cancer. Special thanks to my friends who came out Stef Woods (a survivor!), Alex Naini, Andrea Roane and Krystal Person. CBCC does 2,000 free breast screenings a year… a $50 donation could and has saved a life. Today more than $120,000 was raised. Thank you everybody.. and see you for breakfast in 2012. Honoring the Promise was one of the most beautiful events I have attended in Washington. The gala/concert commemorating Ambassador Nancy Brinker’s promise to her sister to find a cure 30 years ago brought more than the stars out— it gave hope. Network news anchor and breast cancer survivor Robin Roberts was an excellent emcee and survivor stories from Cynthia Nixon, Olivia Newton-John and Australian singing sensation Delta Goodrem touched the heart. Former First Lady Laura Bush got a standing ovation as she was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Distinction Award. Tory Burch (with a magnificent necklace!) presented DC’s First Lady Michelle Fenty with the Community Distinction Award for her work with the Capital Breast Care Center. The night raised $1.9 Million dollars.. the most Komen has EVER raised in one evening.

Smashing Reception at the British Embassy

October is breast cancer awareness month and one of the biggest events happening is this Thursday: The Gift of Life Breakfast.

It’s the annual signature event of the Capital Breast Care Center. This amazing place is the only community based center that gives free breast  screenings and other services to women who cannot afford it– for free.  DC’s First Lady Michelle Fenty is the President of CBCC and so passionate about this issue. She supported us at our Newsbabes event in May and continues to push the fight in funding for this disease. Other rocks behind the cause… British Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald and his lovely wife who opened their Washington home for a reception to kick-off excitement for the breakfast. At the party, Mayor Adrian Fenty read a proclamation declaring October as ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month’ in DC. Speaking at the Gift of Life Breakfast this Thursday… some of Washington’s most prominent women including Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes-Norton and Councilwoman Mary Cheh. Tune in for coverage of the kick-off event on the WUSA9 Morning Show  Thursday morning.
