Band of lawyers offer free help in DC

Did you know that in DC, metropolitan police get more 31 thousand domestic violence calls a year.
There’s a group of lawyers trying to change that providing low income victims of domestic violence legal help for FREE.
I sit down to speak with domestic abuse victim Yvonne Rivers. She tells me about the project and how “I needed that at that time. Because here I had been assaulted, I didn’t know what the next steps were.”
Tonight on News4 at 6pm Yvonne talks about breaking free after finding help many don’t know is there.I’ll share the resources offered by the “DC Volunteer Lawyers Project” to those with urgent family law needs.FullSizeRender(2)

Filming at Paradise Springs Winery

We couldn’t have asked for a better day to head to Paradise Springs Winery. The weather was magnificent! I met my producer Jason Gittlen and intern Hillary on the grounds where we geared up to shoot a 30 minute Nonstop Scene DC Show. We walked the viewer through everything from the history of the place (It was built in the late 1700’s!) to the vineyard to production.
Extra sweet– a visit from my co-anchor Richard and weekend producer Charlitta! It was indeed a great day filled with fine wine and good friends. Tune in to our first show Monday November 19th at 10PM. Watch NBC Washington NonStop on Comcast 208,VZ FIOS 460 or COX 803.

At the entrance of Yates Ford Road in Clifton with owner Kirk Wiles.

Learning how to crack crabs

It’s a shame.

I call this place home and I still don’t know how to crack a Maryland crab. In fact, it’s why I won’t order them or lobster.. unless they are pre-cracked. It’s not because I’m lazy… it’s because it’s intimidating.

Fear no more… Chef John Shields of PBS Food’s Coastal Cooking give me a lesson in Crab cracking 101 at Wildfire Restaurant!

RECIPE: Maryland Crabcakes

For recipes check out John’s website. If you have a good one or any tips to the tricky business of cracking crabs.. please feel free to share!

Hope in 2012

I often joke about what “hope” is ever since I heard a funny radio jock say it’s just the “postponement of disappointment”. Think about it. We “hope” to win the lottery. We “hope” for a good pay raise. We “hope” the Redskins win… the list goes on.

But I still find it great that so many Americans are hopeful for 2012. We reported that a new AP-GfK poll shows that 62% of people said they were optimistic about what the New Year will bring the nation. 78% said they’re upbeat about how 2012 will impact their family.

Almost 40% said they think the next year will be better financially for them.

How do you feel about saying goodbye to 2011. How do you plan to make this upcoming year better than the past. Resolutions? I’m not big on them but I am going to try to do better with my spending. Balancing my own personal budget will be a big task but I’m up for it.

By the way if you’re not going out on NYE’s don’t forget to join us on NBC for a big New Year’s Eve celebration. I’ll be anchoring the 6 & 11pm newscasts too. Then on Sunday, January 1st don’t miss our 9AM show.  I’ll have the next thing closest to a modern day Greek God.. personal trainer Laurent in studio. He’s going to show us some upbeat Yala moves that we can do quickly and in our own home to whip ourselves back into shape!

News4 Today 9AM on Sunday… better than aspirin, I promise.
Happy New Year all!
