Dinner party and the pig

Nothing like some gourmet suckling pig wrapped in crackle to be a reason to congregate! I enjoyed hanging with women leaders in media and business at Art and Soul near Capitol Hill. Executive Chef Wes Morton wowed the crowd of friends with his 4 courses family style dinner. It included an heirloom melon salad and the milk fed pig with egglplant casserole. There was also a local cheese board with fresh honey comb. Apparently honey is the new thing to pair cheese with these days!

Fashion’s Night Out

Pounding Rain, 2 and half hours sitting in traffic.. nothing could keep me away from Fashion’s Night Out. I joined good girlfriends to toast FNO Georgetown at the VIP reception held at L2. From their we made our rounds to Dean & Deluca, Nectar Skin Bar, Intermix  and more. We enjoyed Citronelle’s fashion show and great wining and dining at Peacock Cafe’ after hours.  Check out more pictures from DC’s most fashionable night!

Oh and of course you know who had to partake in FNO! Check out her new boots.

Happy Anniversary Kirk & Mike

Big congrats to Kirk McEwen and Mike O’Meara the funny co-hosts of the Kirk &  Mike Show on 105.9 The Edge. I love being part of this show daily and can honestly say they always help put me in a good mood early in the morning even when I’m fighting it.

PHOTOS: K&M Anniversary Party

The dynamic duo had a little party to celebrate 1 year of being on air together in hometown Herndon at Jimmy’s Old Town Tavern. I brought the whole clan out to celebrate. I think the highlight was the guys got to meet CHIN!  Congrats K&M.. here’s to many more years of cracking us up during DC’s most terrible morning drive.

BRB: Neighbor with a big bite

Okay if you’re gonna break your diet.. and you’re doing it with burgers you must go big or don’t go at all.

Yes that’s my table at the new BRB burger joint in Reston Town Center. BRB which stands for Be Right Burger opened up right next to the ice skating rank.

FREE BURGER: Check in w/ Foursquare

DEALS: Join BRB on Facebook

It’s really a cool concept. There are touch screens for you to place your order and pay for it while you’re waiting in line. The signature items run the hunger gamut.. from the Samurai Turkey Burger, to the Shroomin Burger, the Lobster Roll and the monster Hangover (see below). What I love is that the meat is all-natural, hormone and antibiotic free Angus beef from a local Maryland farm.

Adora who has just started to eat solids took a liking to the kid french fries- cut out like smiley faces! Sauces were amazing too– my fave was the wasabi mayo which is what I dipped my fries in. Oh the best part. Thursday through Friday BRB is open until 3AM! BRB is located at 1820 Discovery Street at the Reston Town Center.

Shawn, Me and Elaine with Chef Philippe Reininger

The weather was perfect for an afternoon lunch with the news gals here in DC. This time we gathered at the new J&G Steakhouse on 15th and Pennsylvania. As we enjoyed appetizing fried calamari and rice cracker crusted tuna we laughed about being moms and the new “Go the ___ to Sleep” book that’s all the rave these days amongst parents. When it was entree’ time we were impressed to find out that the steakhouse is vegan friendly! A couple of the gals had no problem ordering. Halibut in a scallion-spicy chili sauce was a popular pick this day. I was also happy to see they have Sips & Bites from 5-7pm on weekdays where you can get smaller portions of their dishes paired with wine at the wine bar.

It was also great to chit chat with cityshopgirl turned radio host Kelly Collis who recently helped launch the new morning show on 94.7 FRESH FM. Shout out to Eun Yang for arranging the get together… really enjoyed catching up with all the girls at the table.. Anita Brikman, Lesli Foster, Elaine Reyes and Shawn Yancy!

“Go the F*** to Sleep” author comes to DC

He’s finally making it to DC. Adam Mansbach brings his hilarious (and very real) take on the not-so-perfect moments of parenthood to the Nation’s Capital.
Mansbach will do a public book signing of his #1 New York Times Best Seller “Go the F*** to Sleep.”

It’s going down next Wednesday July 27 at PJ Clarke’s. It’s from 6-8pm. Event location is 1600 K Street, NW DC. Based off the cover and my childhood I thing a funny tagline would be: Love, Tiger Mom

Mandu

Mandu is a favorite thing of mine.. the Korean dumpling often stuffed with veges, pork or beef are awesome steamed or fried and dipped in soy sauce. Now I have another Mandu I’ll keep in mind whenever I get the craving for Korean in DC. The family-run restaurant on K Street is just awesome. This is the Lee family’s newest location and actually boasts extra items you won’t find on the menu elsewhere. It’s a fab spot for lunch throughout the week and has a dinner menu too.  Joining me for lunch was my little sis Jenny Kim and Korean food lover Flounder aka DJ Flounder from DC101. We had an absolute blast and started off with Hobak Jeon (zucchini fried in egg and flour) and of course mandu.

As for our meals we decided to teach Flounder (who has some mad chopsticks skills) how to eat one of our favorites: Dol Sot Bi Bim Bap. Think rice bowl, tons of vegetables, beef and hot paste served in a scolding hot stone bowl. There’s a raw egg on top and the idea is you mix it all together, adding in the hot paste allowing the stone bowl to fry the rice and cook the egg before your eyes. Jenny Kim got the same thing while I opted for spicy soup called Kimchi Jigae.

I spoke with Mrs. Lee who is called “Mama Lee” in the kitchen and she told me how she moved to DC in 1974. She started the restaurant on her own and has since been able to open up this second location on K Street with the help of her son Danny and daughter. She says whenever she’s at one of the restaurants you will always find her in the kitchen.. either cooking or supervising.

I could tell our meal had an oma touch (oma is mom in Korean). The food tasted very authentic.. just like my mom Chin would make.  In addition to great bites.. there’s an awesome bar and whole upstairs level for more dining.

The deets:

Location: 453 K Street, NW DC, Parking: Metered parking, paid lot on K Street or Parking Garage on I Street

Average app: $7 Average meal: $12

Miss DC: The interviews

Miss DC organization's Teri Galvez with Washington Post's John Kelly, a judge

Pageants are work. A lot of work. We had day one of judging the Miss DC pageant and what an impressive of group of young women we have this year. As someone who enjoys public speaking I have to admit I would be terrified if I was in their shoes. Our panel of judges (6) spent hours grilling the gals on everything from Obama’s healthcare plan and Bachman to fundraising tactics and tech trends. The range of ambition stretched from world renowned opera singer to Middle East global ambassador.

GET TICKETS: Miss DC 2011

What are we told to look for? The full package of course: Sharp public speaker with confidence, brains and of course a good look.

“This isn’t a beauty pageant… but it’s not an ugly pageant either, ” one official reminded.

MORE: Pick your favorite contestant

After nearly 4 hours of private interviews with the contestants there is no doubt it’s going to be a very hard decision. There are 3 women who stand out to me at this point but there’s still a lot that can change as the competition continues.

Why don’t you join us for the journey? This Sunday you’ll get the stuff made for TV. Swimsuit, formal gown, talent. It’s happening July 10th at 7pm at The Arena Stage.

Judges Chef Spike Mendelsohn and Angie cut loose between contestants

Heavy Sifting: Judges had to study bio, platforms, personal statements of 20 contestants and come up with personalized questions for all.
