MD Mall Shooting on Social Media

Since the first tweets went out of shots fired.. we have followed this story of the Columbia Mall Shooting on social media. This morning Howard County Executive Ken Ulman tweeted out a request.

We are also hearing from people who went to high school with the suspected shooter Darion Aguilar. Noah Sturdivant who says his locker was next to Aguilars defended his friend on twitter saying..

Aguilar graduated from Blake high school last year.
New this morning.. the school’s principal sent a letter to the community asking to keep the families affected by this incident in your thoughts and prayers. He adds for those upset.. there will be counselors to speak with at school today.

Tweets to determine your personality?

One of my morning stories.. that may have you double thinking what you tweet. What if I told you there’s new software that lets your boss determine whether your dedicated or lazy by looking at your feed.
IBM claims to have new profiling technology that paints a picture of your personality based on your tweets. The software scans recent tweets.. analyzing words to to develop your profile.
For example caring people may use words like WE, FAMILY and HOME while the dedicated talk more about their achievements.
Researchers say employers can use the data to see if someone is right for the job.
IBM tested the software, analyzing 300 twitter profiles while getting users to take psychometric tests. They report the two favored each other more than 80% of the time.

Covering Syria

In the newsroom we’re all following the crisis in Syria very closely. If you are too.. feel free to adopt this twitter list I made of people to follow. All you have to do is go to the link and click “subscribe”. If there’s someone you think I should add feel free to chime in. The list is a combination of journalists, politicians, activist, military analysts, observers and Syrians. The Washington Post recently published the top 23 accounts to follow regarding this subject. I’ve included some of them in my list too.

#Sandy Swamps Social Media

There’s no question Sandy was unlike any storm we’ve ever seen. The blending with a winter system.. the full moon… everything was in place to make this thing a monster. She was also a huge force on social media. In the last day hashtag #Sandy had more than 4 million mentions by a near 400,000 unique sources on Twitter. That according to @Radian6… a social media use tracker. It’s reported by USA Today #Sandy mentions have a potential to reach more than 3 billion Twitter followers.

On Facebook “Hurricane Sandy” was the top phrase in the US in the last day. Meanwhile, Instagram had 233,000 photos with #Sandy. According to the AP there were another 100,000 pictures with HurricaneSandy and 20,000 under Frankenstorm.

To put it in perspective.. we’re looking at 10 pictures per second being posted with #Sandy says Instagram officials.

For a news operation like NBC4.. social media was a top priority. In times when power goes out.. mobile access is the only way people get crucial information. We not only live streamed our newscasts but constantly updated all platforms.

We now count on our viewers to show us what is happening around them in times of crisis. Sometimes it’s the only way we can really tell the story.. as crews can only be so many places at one time. We received great videos and photos throughout the storm coverage.. many of which were used on air.

And as always expected.. .there was a fair share of humor that made the rounds online. In particular, the now infamous Horse Headed man who popped up jogging shirtless in Megan McGrath’s live shot. He became an instant trend. It wasn’t long before he had his own twitter handle, interviewed with the Washington Post and did rounds on morning radio.

Social media.. oh the power.

Oh and for those wondering who that crazy horse head guy is… his name is Jimmy.

Debate #2: Join our coverage

We want your opinion on the issue, the moderator, the President’s tie, Big Bird (ok no more big bird) but you get the idea.

From your submissions I will choose some responses, pics and video to share on News4 at 11 following the debate.

Caught on Cam: Chris Brown in DC

My intern Yoni texted me yesterday… she was with Chris Brown at Bar 7 in DC!

I said take some pics girl.. and she did that and more. Yoni headed to the downtown hot spot after Chris Brown tweeted the location of his secret listening party for a preview of his upcoming album F.A.M.E.

In less than an hour, adoring fans flocked to Bar 7, packing the venue full of matching “Team Breezy” t-shirts, cameras, high hopes and heavy anticipation. Although the album is unreleased, eager fans hummed along and danced to unknown tunes “She ain’t you”, “Next 2 You”, “Bomb”, and his personal favorite, “Beautiful People”.

A Virginia native himself, Brown expressed his deep gratitude for area fans in between songs and then hit them with the dougie!

The album releases March 22 and is available for pre-order on iTunes and Amazon

Renting Dresses & my Today Show 'Bump' Time

I recently tweeted that I found the fabulous ‘Rent-the-Runway’.  It seems like the perfect solution for someone who is constantly going to events. This cool website lets you borrow designer dresses at a fraction of what it would cost to own them. From Milly to Lilly to Oscar de la Renta and Valentino it seems their’s something for everyone’s level of fine taste. My twitter friend @crisclapp sent me these pics of a recent rental she wore to a wedding. Cris says  ” I can’t tell you how many compliments I got all night, I was definitely pleased with the RTR experience”.

Cris ordered one size since she knew how the designer fit on her but RTR gives you teh option to order a backup size for free. She rented it for $50… new it would’ve cost $350.

She is a ray of sunshine.. and said she didn’t want to return it!

Another favorite site of mine is .. basically it’s a forum for you to get feedback on outfits your considering for work, play or a special event! I love it… and recently found out it landed me on Good Morning America and The Today Show.

Watch Today Show… fast forward to 2:21 in the video:
