“Stars Over Dulles” Shine Bright, Help Soldiers

What a glamorous and generous night! The Dulles Chamber of Commerce honored the best in local business and at the same time raised more than $17,000 on the spot for the USO. I was honored to emcee the sold-out event that included wonderful surf ‘n’ turf, music by The Karma Issue and inspiring stories of the good work being done to help our service men and women. Notable guests included Senator Mark Herring, Delegate Tom Rust and Delegate Ken Plum. Special thanks to Jenet Ahn for her amazing work as event chairwoman. She pulled off a party that went beyond a purpose. Photos by Rich Kessler

Courtside Salute & Surprise!

It was an honor to be part of the military tribute at the Legg Mason Tennis Tournament this year. The Yellow Ribbon Fund and USO teamed up to organize the ceremony that happened right before the start of the Semi-Finals.  I joined a group of nearly 30 made up of volunteers and friends and family of wounded warriors. We practiced the unfurling of the flag only once and nailed it when it was time to do it for the the crowd! It was an amazing feeling of patriotism… the last time I held the flag and helped fold it was in high school. One of my JROTC duties was to raise and take down the flag  before and after class. Watch coverage of the event on WUSA9 below… and check out more of the story including a special surprise on the stadium’s court. More…

Another touching moment was when Milkbone Canine Assistance awarded a disabled veteran with one of their amazing service dogs. The dogs can help with everything from pulling a wheelchair, to turning on lights to 90 other commands. The tennis players took time to say thank you and take a picture with the veteran.

Anna told me she’ll be back in DC a lot this summer not only to play some tennis (July 21st) but also to do hands on charity work with PSI and the USO. Oh, and what about that GIGANTIC yellow diamond she’s been sporting’ on her ring finger for more than a year. I asked her what the story was? With a wide grin and giggle she playfully replied “what… there is no story!”

Watch coverage of the party on WUSA9 TV Monday Morning between 5-7AM.

Miss California Kristy Cavinder was 1st runner up. I was a huge fan of our friend Jen from DC of course but also took a liking to Miss Hawaii who had a down to Earth, tomboy like attitude. Miss Arkansas was great too and really embodied that old glam Miss America look. Miss Puerto Rico was just flat out striking. Read more from The Examiner

We’ll work on getting Caressa in for a studio interview at Channel 9.

Maybe she’ll let me try on that crown… but we know how that turned out last time I had a chance. See below.
