Wounded warriors hit the links

It’s one of my favorite events of the year: The Yellow Ribbon Fund Army-Navy Golf Classic. This year General Stanley McChrystal was the guest of honor. Once again we had the chance to meet some amazing heroes at the tourney that pairs injured service members with supporters on the greens.

Golfers this year raised more than $217,000 for the Yellow Ribbon Fund. YRF supports injured servicemembers in the area and their families.  I was honored to co-host the awards ceremony with This Week in Defense host Vago Muradian. Photos by Michael Clements. Tune in to WUSA9’s Morning Show Wednesday to see coverage from the great day!

Silver Star Day at Walter Reed

Thank you.

Citizens Helping Heroes hosted Heroes Silver Star Day at Walter Reed. It was amazing how the gray skies turned blue and the rain stopped so wounded servicemembers and their families could enjoy an all American BBQ on the quad at the Mologne House. It was an honor to host this event again! Read more about why advocates want Silver Star Day to be named a National day to honor our wounded warriors.

Courtside Salute & Surprise!

It was an honor to be part of the military tribute at the Legg Mason Tennis Tournament this year. The Yellow Ribbon Fund and USO teamed up to organize the ceremony that happened right before the start of the Semi-Finals.  I joined a group of nearly 30 made up of volunteers and friends and family of wounded warriors. We practiced the unfurling of the flag only once and nailed it when it was time to do it for the the crowd! It was an amazing feeling of patriotism… the last time I held the flag and helped fold it was in high school. One of my JROTC duties was to raise and take down the flag  before and after class. Watch coverage of the event on WUSA9 below… and check out more of the story including a special surprise on the stadium’s court. More…

Another touching moment was when Milkbone Canine Assistance awarded a disabled veteran with one of their amazing service dogs. The dogs can help with everything from pulling a wheelchair, to turning on lights to 90 other commands. The tennis players took time to say thank you and take a picture with the veteran.

Beautiful: Honoring Military Widows Left Behind

It was a night to say thank you to the widows of the fallen.

The Got Your Back Network hosted ‘Martinis & Makeovers’ at the Ritz Carlton Georgetown. It was a night to pamper and thank 13 women who’s husband’s made the ultimate sacrifice in the current war. Former TV ‘Bachelor’ Andy Baldwin  started the Got Your Back Network. The group provides guidance and resources for spouses like Andrea , Vivanne and Barbara who were left behind. Congrats Caressa! Miss America 2010

Miss VA Caressa Cameron is now Miss America 2010. Way to go girl! Hats off to our pal Jen Corey for making the top 12 and performing brilliantly during the talent competition. You shined!

Casino Night

[Picture: I first met Caressa this Fall at USO Casino Night at the Sheraton in Arlington… for veterans staying at Walter Reed. Very gracious gal and we know she will make America proud! Also pictured Kelly Olson and former TV “Bachelor” Andy Baldwin]

Caressa wins the Crown, AP Photo

Miss California Kristy Cavinder was 1st runner up. I was a huge fan of our friend Jen from DC of course but also took a liking to Miss Hawaii who had a down to Earth, tomboy like attitude. Miss Arkansas was great too and really embodied that old glam Miss America look. Miss Puerto Rico was just flat out striking. Read more from The Examiner

We’ll work on getting Caressa in for a studio interview at Channel 9.

Maybe she’ll let me try on that crown… but we know how that turned out last time I had a chance. See below.
