A Final Salute

This Saturday on NBC4 we are airing a special show dedicated to our Veterans. I will be reporting a story that is truly inspirational. Please join us as we witness a final salute. I’ll introduce you to an amazing group that is helping America’s bravest feel pride and peace during the end of their lives. Here’s a preview:

Remembering the Fallen

Wishing everyone a safe holiday weekend. Hope you can take time out to remember our fallen heroes. Sometimes we forget there is a war still going on and lives continue to be lost.

Thinking this weekend and Monday about all those who gave their lives.. and their families who now bravely live on without them.

If you get a chance.. I would recommend watching a movie that will get you thinking, move you to tears and show you another side of war. It’s called “Taking Chance” and stars Kevin Bacon.

I stand before you

I Stand Before You
by Roger J. Robicheau

I Stand Before You

I stand before you all today
But not one eye can see my way

My time arrived, to leave this earth
A fact so planned, to every birth

It happened where I had to go
My torch for life was so aglow

I transferred while in uniform
Protecting freedom, through a storm

Should I resent I died for you
Not on my life, red white and blue

Please help my family through each day
Tell all my friends, try not to stray

And of the country I did love
Do think of me, through God above

Your memories, brought forth this day
Send love to us, who could not stay

As part of a family of many veterans I want to say thank you to all those who sacrificed their lives for our Country. A heartfelt thanks to their families who continue to give so much.

Surf ‘n’ Turf tribute to wounded warriors

Fort Belvoir was rockin’ with the help of some great bands and country star Ayla Brown. Her name may ring a bell.. remember election night when Scott Brown won the Senate seat in Massachusetts and decided to tell the world his daughter was available. Yep that’s her. Oh and speaking of him…. the Senator was on hand too to share some words of inspiration for the troops. Citizens Helping Heroes hosted the Heroes Silver Star Day to celebrate our wounded warriors in the area. I helped emcee the bbq that was a mix of some great surf and turf thanks to Chef David Ivey-Soto. Little background for ya.. the US Senate recently passed a resolution to make May 1st Silver Star Service Banner day… a national day of observance for injured service members. Citizens Helping Heroes believes everyday should be a silver star day which is why it hosts the events for military men and women and their families throughout the year.

Cupcakes for Courage

Here’s a sweet way to salute our military.

DC cupcakery.. Hello Cupcake hosted Cupcakes for Courage.

Held for service members at their new North East location in Barracks Row… families got to decorate cupcakes and eat for free. Some of the sales went to Camp Desert Kids– a program that helps children deal with their parent’s deployment.

Local video selected for Youtube feature film

Remember when acclaimed producer Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald called on the youtube community to submit their “Life in a Day” video from July 24, 2010? Since then the team has cut down more than 80,000 submissions into a 90 minute documentary that will premiere at Sundance.

I’m happy to report that the submission from Milinda Jefferson and Jerome Bourgeois from DC was one of the clips chosen! Milinda told me their July 24th was spent at the Weekend of Remembrance. It’s a weekend set aside to honor families of fallen military members. Milinda spent the day promoting the Honor and Remember flag which you’ll see often in the raw footage I’ve posted below. How much of their clips will make it to the big screen..we’ll have to wait and see. Congrats and thank you for always keeping our brave men and women and their families in your thoughts and prayers.
