WIS-TV: Revisiting the blast from the past

While visiting family in South Carolina I decided to do a drop in at my old shop WIS-TV. It was like a big reunion. I got to see my former desk mate Dawndy who showered baby Adora with the most precious little outfit. It was so awesome seeing old work pals and sharing the new headline of my life- the baby! You know you’ve got true friends when you conveniently show up an hour before stories and anchors gotta be on-air and everyone stops to hug it out despite it being crunch time.

We Walked Like MADD… and why I'm still mad

WATCH: Coverage of the Walk Like MADD 5K on WUSA9 TV

You can see from my shirt below that I walked in the Loudon County Walk Like Madd event for a young boy I sadly never had a chance to meet. First off I want to say hats off to the walkers for raising $7,000 for drunk driving awareness and education in our area.

Now to why events particularly like this touch me.  I met Sullivan’s family in 2005 under grim circumstances when I was a reporter in SC. 5 year old Sullivan Spradley of Kershaw County had returned from church with his family on Father’s Day. He was on a bike ride with his dad in broad daylight when the horrible happened. A drunk driver, a man I later learned was a repeat DUI offender hit Sullivan. Sullivan died an hour after the accident.

It was one of those stories you didn’t want to cover. But as important as doing stories to honor the brave little boy’s memory were the series of stories that followed that shed light on loopholes in SC law that allowed repeat offenders, people like the man who killed Sullivan back on the road.

Through this time I became friends with the family. Visiting his kind parents Tim and Tonya at their home. I also covered their days in court… reporting on the conviction of Donald Brown a man I watched receive his sentence for 13 years in jail.

Angie Reports: Man Sentenced to 13 Years for hit and run that killed 5 year-old

It’s been 5 years and I still get Christmas cards from the Spradley’s. As a journalist there are stories and people you will never forget. The Spradley’s are one of those stories. I don’t live there anymore, but I feel I can reach out from anywhere on this serious issue… even if it’s just by doing 12.5 laps around a high school track.

To the Spradley’s and all families who have lost loved ones to this senseless crime. It’s okay to stay mad. From getting more education in our schools to getting ignition interlock systems passed in more states the fight is far from over. Keep walking, keep talking and stay hopeful for that day that drunk driving  doesn’t take anymore innocent lives.

Oh Snap! Carolina Cup and my raceday awards

I spent  my weekend in historic Camden South Carolina for the annual running of the Carolina Cup. Of course it was COLD due to the winds but anything is better than rain. We made it by about 3 tailgate spots before both Jennifer and me decided our dresses weren’t cute enough to freeze for and  broke out our cardigans. Best dressed? Goes to our pal NBC associate producer Sarah Gregory who rolled up in a full blown fleece. Most Entertaining? Guys in khaki and button ups mud wrestling in College Park. Biggest Win? the last Lilly koozie from the designers appropriately patterned tent.

Birthday with Solid Friends & LiquidA

Thanks to sister-for-life Kristina Dorville who took it back old school to Arlington to celebrate my life. How old you ask? According to the picture on the right..I’d say about 5. (And while we’re on this picture why not add: cheeky Carissa is a supermodel- had to steal that one from Lauren P)

It’s a great example of a carefree night had by all at the Clarendon Grill in Arlington. Apparently, there was another girl named Katie celebrating her birthday too but my good friends made it clear to the band there was truly only ONE party in the house! All you had to do was look for the front row of friends who created the first ever ‘hit line’. Yep excessive ’fist pumping’ was in the air and our energetic ring leader was none other than good friend Katherine Kennedy. If our performance didn’t win you over chances are we had you at “Want a mini red velvet cupcake from Bakeshop?”  Justin the owner of the new Arlington joint was so sweet to send dozens of the birthday bites our way.  [Pictured above: Carissa, Jesse, Dr. Alex, Angie & Lauren P. OMG 3/19/10: Correspondents Dinner & BBC Afterparty

OMG on WUSA9 March 19, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA)–  Oh My GOFF! Angie Goff reports on the RTCA Correspondents Dinner and BBC Afterparty in Washington.  The VP, Kathy Griffin and journalism A-listers turn out.

[Pictured: Contessa Brewer and friend John]

From the old reporter reel

Every reporter has them.. old stories and shows sitting somewhere from their reporting past! I figured every now and then I’d post stuff from the Angie archives. Stuff that came long before OMG! Here’s a report on a SC city using cardboard cops to slow down drivers. The story eventually aired on CNN.
