Fat Shaming or Thinspiration on Social Media?

This mom of 3 has caused a social media firestorm after posting a hot picture of herself with the kids along with the caption “What’s your excuse?”

Facebook critics are now accusing her of fat shaming women. The picture has gotten more than 16 million views and over 12,000 comments. People have been supporting her (I mean DANG she does look good!) but others have gone as far out to say she’s a bully.

As a mom of two who gained 80+ with the last one– I just want to know what her secret is!
Her name is Maria Kang and she’s actually has set up a FAQ on her website addressing all the questions good and bad she’s received since posting this.

Some of you have inquired about my weight loss journey since having Bob. Happy to report in the last 4 1/2 months I’ve lost 63 pounds. I’m now doing strength training with a trainer two times a week and doing my best to stick with a 1,200 calorie diet. It has been extremely tough but I’ve learned to take it week by week.

Reading up on Maria.. she actually had weight issues too and has worked hard to achieve herΒ  look now. I think people may be taken aback by the caption. Personally, I think it’s her page, her body and she can do what she wants. As I continue to try to lose weight my mindset is– give me inspiration. I can look at a photo like this and think– yeah that’s where I wanna go.

Meantime– back to the treadmill πŸ™‚

I would like to encourage this picture, because this lady is really cool to me. I like her spunk and inspiration to better herself, see? Don’t be a hater, God bless.

She looks great, and I know it’s hard to find exercise when you have three kids. That said, when her sons grow up and see this picture, I wonder what they’ll think of their mom posting it for all to see.

Okay that picture is super motivating!! I am constantly making excuses for not finding time to work out….working late, early meeting, no time, etc. etc. and to see that someone with 3 kids has time for it makes me feel ashamed! I have no excuse and will force myself to hit the gym tomorrow AM πŸ™‚ (I don’t know if that was the point of her photo?) XOXOXO Your LIl Ann

Hmmm….I think her caption is not much different from the athletic memes you see floating around on Pinterest and on Facebook by sports/fitness enthusiasts. My excuse is that I’m busy doing my laundry. Well, I’m busy doing things instead of my laundry. I’m just busy. πŸ™‚

I applaud her! She asks the tough question and isn’t afraid to respond to her critics and the fall out the post generated. At the end of the day, I think my personal trainer says it best, “Excuses are the lies we tell ourselves when we just don’t want to do what it takes to succeed.” It’s a painful truth but one that can be applied to every area of our lives, not just fitness.
